This is the first of two installments about an apparition from medieval times of the Virgin Mary protecting the Republic of Novgorod.
An an effort to help you with your Christmas shopping to do list, I’ve also included in this podcast a reading from the Audiobook version of my second book, “The Very Fine Light.”
Novgorod was a city-state trade center, a vital link located at the crossroads of the Germanic, Greek and Baltic regions.
The four Kingdoms of Russia were determined to overrun and carve up the wealthy trade center and take it for their own.
The people of Novgorod were a people engaged in merchant trades, not focused on military might. The armies at their gates were well trained and determined.
Fortunately, the Virgin Mary appeared to the Bishop of Novgorod who had been praying to an icon of the Madonna, first known as “Our Lady of the Sign” and afterward more popularly known as the “Kurst-Root Icon.” More about the icon will come next week in the second part of this appearance of the Virgin Mary.
